Project Overview

This project aims to introduce coastal defense facilities on Lantau Island, with the goal of conserving its historical and cultural heritage.  Positioned to the east of the Pearl River Estuary during the Ming and Qing dynasties, Lantau Island held strategic military significance, directly influencing the stability of the empire and the orderly conduct of maritime trade.  To safeguard against various hostile forces, a series of coastal defense facilities were constructed during that era.  As a result, these structures, particularly the Fan Lau fort, Tung Chung Walled City and the Fort, as well as Tai O Police Station have become significant artificial resources for understanding the historical context of the military activities of that period.  Nevertheless, the general public remains inadequately informed about these historical details, representing a substantial lacuna in public knowledge.

This project features a combination of technology and physical experiences to offer a diverse array of on-site and off-site activities, including watching short cultural heritage-themed animations, engaging in on-site photography and sketching expeditions, participating in photography competitions and exhibitions, exploring site-specific augmented reality, and experiencing checkpoint audio stories.  The aim is to stimulate public interest and awareness in coastal defense facilities through various channels.  Also, on-site activities will collaborate with ten primary and secondary schools to conduct workshops.  Project team will develop tabletop games featuring various three-dimensional cardboard models, distributing the final products to multiple schools across Hong Kong to maximize their educational impact. The utilization of mobile apps, websites, and social media platforms will contribute to comprehensive promotion and sharing.  It is anticipated that these innovative and engaging activities will deepen participants’ understanding, particularly among primary and secondary school students, regarding the selection, architectural design, operational purposes of coastal defense facilities, and the broader understanding of the coastal defence system. Participants will gain insights into the functions and roles of areas like Fan Lau, Tung Chung and Tai O in modern Chinese military defense, as well as the close relationship between Lantau Island and China. Ultimately, these activities aim to enhance participants’ abilities in critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication.

This project seeks to showcase to the public that Lantau Island possesses not only a diverse and vibrant natural landscape but also remains rich in historical and cultural resources, which can foster the development of a local recreation tourist hub in this area.

Mission & Vision

IMG_0261.JPG

It is important to protect and review the historical and cultural heritage such as coastal defense in Lantau Island of Hong Kong as it enhances a sense of belonging to people in the community/ place, and provides positive impact on various aspects of the way a community develops.

Located to the east of the Pearl River Estuary, Lantau Island has been an important strategic point for maritime trade since Song dynasty, especially during the Ming and Qing dynasties. For example, when Westerners headed north to Mainland China, they usually passed through Lantau Island. In order to prevent pirates, anti-Qing forces, Western invaders and other hostile forces, maintain the stability of the regime and ensure the orderly conduct of maritime trade, the Ming and Qing governments built coastal defense facilities on Lantau Island successively, such as forts and walled city. So this project could help people learn about Lantau Island's role in defense not only in Hong Kong but also in South China during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

This educational engagement project aims to educate people to understand the historical role of Lantau Island during that period. This project will link up the coastal defense facilities such as forts and walled city on Lantau Island. Through various materials and activities, including animation watching, field trips, photos contest, workshop, etc, people will learn about the characteristics and importance of the coastal defense facilities, the overall coastal defense system, and the role and function of Lantau Island in the military defense system in Hong Kong and South China.

Having the planned materials and activities mentioned, the idea and value of historical and cultural conservation awareness will be raised and disseminated, not only to primary, secondary school students as well as post-secondary students, but also to the public participants.
